best childhood friends

i received a text on Saturday morning from my best friend growing up saying "cathy, i just woke up from a dream where my family was over grilling in your backyard. i miss you!"

man. what a text. it reminded me that people don't just move on after they move away. your closest friends always stay close in your heart, no matter how far away they are. i am so thankful that i have friends who care more than i think. she recently moved out to the east coast this past december to start her full time job, and i miss her SOOOOOOO much. the holidays just weren't the same without her at the family parties we'd spent every year together growing up. when she moved out there, i automatically flipped the "off" switch on our friendship, assuming that chapter of our friendship ended. but this weekend, she proved that it doesn't have to be that way.

in the past, i convinced myself that the "out of sight, out of mind" principle applied to friends. this might be true for some people, but i guess i also forgot this is impossible when you have friends who have made such a big impact (positive or negative... hopefully positive) in your life. it's hard to forget those friends. and i'm always amazed by how easy it is to catch up or open up and be vulnerable with old friends, regardless of how long it's been since you last talked to them. they always get you, regardless of how much things have changed outside your relationship. these friends are the best.

close friends stay close to your heart, regardless of the distance.
